Most people probably aren't going to be able to fast track those additional slots. I also don't know if it is worth to unlock those slots.

I am not planning to play a NG.. This has been a very long game and even though it is a great game, is not tempting me as Skyrim did, which I re-played like perhaps more than 30 times from the very beginning.
I used a lot of glitches in the Witcher and I got to level 70 but with the new patch installed, I would not be able to get those points if I start a NG.
There are 20 different skills in every category 10 in other , which gives overall 70 skills to learn. Additionaly skills in target category are divaded into 5 types of them.
Also every skill have number of levels You unlock skills by spending ability points which you gain from leveling up unlocking skills is pernament thing.
There is no skill tree like in previous games. At the begining of the journey you can unlock abilities only from the first line - tier.
Right now there is no information about how you unlock second tier I speculate it's level gated, at example you unlock tier II at lvl Unlocking skills doesn't mean that they will work all the time.
To get them working you need to equip them, like you equip your gear. There are total 12 skill slots, but you start with only 3 slots, rest you will keep unlocking by gaining higher levels all slots will be unlocked at level You can swap you active skills whenever you like, when out of combat.
With total 70 of skills, you can't make Geralt which is great in every ascpect of game like it was in Witcher 1. At example you are preparing to fight very strong monster, which is vulnerable to fire, but sadly you are specialized in Swordmanship.

Equiping skills isn't pernament thing, so feel free to be flexible. Mutagens play huge role in Witcher 3. There are total 4 slots for mutagens, which you unlock by gaining new levels like slots for skills.
You gain mutagens from killing strongest monsters at example Gryphon dropps Sign Intensify Mutagen. There is one huge difference compared to the skills, equiping mutagens is pernament thing.
Once you insert mutagen in slot, you can't pull it off. Actually collor of skills and mutagens is most important thing in the Witcher 3 skill system.
Every mutagen slot is linked to the 3 skill slots. If equped skills have the same collor as the mutagen next to them, they multiply effect of that mutagen 1x by every same collor.

Yeah I would like to know that as well. The way it worked in W2 you were somewhat incentiviced to always wait and see if you would find something better later.

Exactly, that is what I did. I really hope they changed this for W3. I literally never used any mutagens. I didn't know how long the game was until I hit the prologue, at which point I couldn't be assed to bother.
I'm worried about the "mutagens being permanent" statement. If it is like in the W2 where once you put it in there you can never replace it with another better mutagen they are making a huge mistake.
I don't care about losing a mutagen if I replace it with something else. But making a character upgrade like that be a one-shot deal is simply bad game design.
Leveling up mutagens might be a nice solution, so that the mutagen scales with your level, and you only choose which type of effect you want. This is an old post, but just incase anyone else ever comes in here and looks.
I can verify it was changed. You can freely change the mutagens. In this video, a Developer explains that there will be potion for completely resetting skillpoints.
He doesn't address Mutagens specifically, but goes into a lengthy explanation beginning somewhere around the 11min mark where he states explicitly that they don't want people to feel locked into their choices.
That they understand the game is a very long game, and that the players should never be put in a situation where they will regret a character choice they made for the rest of the game.

That doesn't answer my question, which is why I asked it. The equipped mutagen being permanent could just mean that it is not removable once equipped, but another one could still replace it.
Hopefully they changed this mechanic from W2 where, like a poster above said, you are incentivized to not equip any mutagens the entire game since there was a chance you'd get something way better later.
